From the Medical Director:

During the past several years, the UMMC Department of Hospital Laboratories has developed an extensive reference testing service which is utilized by laboratories throughout New England. A cornerstone of this activity has been the availability of numerous very complicated, technically demanding tests which many clinical laboratories simply cannot justify maintaining as part of their test menu. Because of the nature of the patient population at UMMC, we have had to develop these more esoteric testing capabilities and now maintain them as routine procedures. They supplement an extensive general laboratory service such as you would expect to find in a large, tertiary care, referral hospital connected to a medical school. In addition, we benefit from having full-time doctoral-level directors with specialty expertise in each of our laboratory sections. This section of our Web site is intended to introduce certain of our less common tests and invite you to consider using our laboratory as a testing resource. As part of our commitment to establishing a truly comprehensive diagnostic service for our partners, we also offer you the consultative expertise of our department directors.
